A Film Festival in your Living Room?

Thursday, November 4, 2010

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) this week launches MUBI, a brand new film streaming service for PlayStation®3 (PS3™). Available via PlayStation®Network, MUBI is perfect for gamers looking to get something more out of their PS3 by offering instant access to a world of independent, international and classic cinema. MUBI goes live on PS3 in New Zealand on 4th November and, combined with the Video Delivery Store on PlayStation®Store, the PS3’s inbuilt Blu-Ray disc player, and the streaming music service VidZone™, adds a cool edge to an unstoppable line-up of entertainment services.

No need to buy a cinema ticket or attend a film festival, just download the free application from PlayStation Store on PlayStation Network to become a member and enjoy the best films in the comfort of your home. Watch your choice of the monthly free-to-view films, or be spontaneous and take your pick from across the catalogue, with individual films priced at only NZD1.90 for short films and NZD6.90 for feature length films. Or create your own film festival by purchasing a 30 day all you can watch subscription at only NZD24.90 – giving you the freedom to explore and discover whatever you want, as often as you want.

Choose from a library of hundreds of films all specially curated with one simple requirement in mind—they must all be amazing cinema. From fantasy-drama Pan’s Labyrinth to Fellinni’s hedonistic exploration of Rome in La Dolce Vita, this is the incredible world of film brought home. Take a break from your favourite game and explore your passions – from warfare to science fiction, from romance to comedy. With a film for every interest and every passion, we are all invited to join in. With MUBI you also become part of a community with a dedicated forum where PlayStation Network members can exchange and share recommendations with friends and can take the conversation further with seamless Facebook integration. Debate anything and everything from games that should be turned into films, to the best film soundtrack of all time. With MUBI any view is welcome; it’s all in the name of discovering and celebrating great cinema.

MUBI founder and film guru Efe Çakarel commented: “Bringing MUBI to PlayStation opens up the world of independent, foreign and classic film. Our films are from the most visionary directors and creative masterminds on the planet and every film we show has been hailed a classic by the film community. It is about making great films fun and accessible, tearing away the mystique and letting members go on the most unexpected of journeys. It offers films you never even dreamed about, films with an edge, films that you have always wanted to see but haven’t been able to find. Our mission is to put the excitement and adventure into home viewing.”

Andrew House, President and CEO of SCEE added, “The PlayStation audience is passionate about entertainment -- from games to music to movies. MUBI provides a film service with a diverse catalogue of titles that we’re sure will appeal to the broad PlayStation fan base. Most importantly, it is a service that is true to PlayStation’s values, a service that is also a community, where like-minded people can share their views and opinions.”

To help kick start the debate, the team at PlayStation got together with MUBI’s expert panel of curators to create a list of their favourite recommendations for PlayStation fans - including outstanding films that, just like your favourite games, deliver the action, the excitement, the adventure, the enchantment and that unexpected twist. MUBI lets you watch, share and discover, so why not create your own list and share it with the community!
