Are New Zealand Broadband still in Jurassic age?

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

As our kiwi creativity and enormously successful film industry recognized Worldwide.

What happen to our Internet connection?

The government said the expansion and development of broadband is a vital component of New Zealand's economic growth, productivity improvements and the government's wider strategy to increase New Zealand's global competitiveness, particularly compared to other OECD countries.

Where is it now ?

Considering New Zealand is a first world countries but in term of broadband connection I think we are behind with other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries.

Take for instance, Wireless Internet in New Zealand ,some companies such as Vodaphone and Telecom offering mobile broadband using 3G Technology.

But in the United States of America, Wimax is a big thing.

WIMAX is a  a telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes, from point-to-multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access. The technology provides up to 10 Mbps broadband speed without the need for cables.

Here in NZ, a company called Woosh is trying to bring the WIMAX technology here due to lack of funding and facilities it might takes a long time.

As one Wellington Mayoral candidate Jack Yan said, "if we can grow our creative and technological clusters in Wellington—and get free wifi up and running (initially in the centre of the city, expanding outward)—we can grow the local economy and create jobs and will help us on our way to becoming an event greater, international, creative city".

In NZ, 3G is a blockbuster however, in developing countries like Philippines and  Pakistan, they using 4G technology through  Wi-tribe

Wi-tribe is a leading wireless broadband provider focusing on emerging markets in Asia and Africa.

4G (Fourth Generation) is the class of technologies that delivers hi-speed broadband and multimedia services and applications.

In contrast, 3G is voice technology that is being used for some internet applications like small screen applications and casual surfing.

According to Wi-tribe:

  • 4G is broadband that delivers true wired speeds without wires.
  • 4G is faster because it has more bandwidth.
  • 4G is completely portable so you can enjoy it in your office, so you can bring it to your favorite coffee-shop, or your favorite hang out.
  • 4G is 3 times faster than 3G technology.
  • 4G is the preferred broadband technology that will give you the richer, pleasurable internet experience you truly deserve.
I was also shocked some developing countries they already have wireless landline  and fiber optic for them is a thing of the past.

SO ,Are New Zealand Broadband still in Jurassic age?
